StorageGuard collects configuration data from VAST clusters by connecting to the VAST Management Service (VMS) IP address and running read-only REST API calls over HTTPS. This article describes the requirements and how to create the scan account.

Requirements
| Requirement | Details |

| VMS address | The VMS IP address of each VAST cluster. |
| Credentials | A VMS manager (REST API) user name and password. |
| Role and permissions | The manager needs a read-only role that can run queries on all realms. Examples of read-only REST API calls used: GET /clusters, GET /vms, and GET /views. |
| Network access | HTTPS connectivity from the StorageGuard server to the VMS IP address. |
Create a scan account
Create a VMS manager with read-only access, using either the VAST Web UI or the VAST CLI.
Option 1: VAST Web UI
- In the VAST Web UI, from the left navigation menu, select Administrators > Managers.
- Click Create Managers.
- In the Add Manager dialog, complete the manager's details.
- Select the predefined Read-Only role, or assign the View permission on all realms.
- Save the manager.
Option 2: VAST CLI
- Log in to the VAST CLI with an administrator account.

Create the manager. Replace
<role_id>with the ID of the predefined read-only role. The example uses the user namesguard; you can use any user name:manager create --username sguard --role-id <role_id>
