[ Applies to ] StorageGuard 10.1 and later / All supported storage, backup, SAN and cloud systems / Windows and Linux deployments
Once a data source connects, discovery finds the systems it manages and lists them on the category's Systems page. From there you decide exactly which systems StorageGuard scans. This is also where you check each system's connection and scan status.
In this article
Before you begin
- The data source shows Connection Verified. See Add a data source.
Run discovery
- Open the Data Sources page for the category.
- Right-click the data source and select Discovery.
If you set Discovery Options on the data source to add systems automatically, discovered systems are added to the scan scope. Otherwise, enable them yourself as described next.
Choose which systems to scan
| Category | Systems page |
|---|---|
| Storage | Settings > Scan > Storage > Systems |
| SAN | Settings > Scan > SAN > Switches |
| Backup | Settings > Scan > Backup > Systems |
| Cloud | Settings > Scan > Cloud > Services |
| Hosts | Settings > Scan > Servers > Hosts |
- Open the Systems page for the category.
- Select the systems. Use Ctrl or Shift to select several.
- Right-click and select Enable or Disable, or use the toggle on each row.
Disabled systems aren't scanned by any data source in the next scheduled scan.
Add systems that discovery can't find
Two kinds of system must be added by hand. Hosts and VMs managed by a scanned vCenter are discovered, so you don't need to add them.
HPE Alletra arrays
- Go to Settings > Scan > Storage > Systems and click +.
- Select the Type and the data source that will scan the array, enter its IP address, and select the Policy.
- Click Save, then right-click the array and select Verify. The array shows an unverified icon until the connection is verified.
Physical hosts (storage management hosts) - Optional
- Go to Settings > Scan > Servers > Hosts and click +.
- Enter the host's Name, operating system Type, and Primary IP, and select its Site, Policy and scan Group. Optionally, add a Note.
- Click Save.
Note: If you enter a fully qualified domain name, StorageGuard keeps only the host name. You can't rename a host later; to change the name, delete the host and add it again. The operating system type and primary IP can be edited.
Resolve systems found by more than one data source
A system can be discovered by several data sources, for example directly and through its management system, but only one data source can scan it. The Source column lists every data source that found the system; grayed-out entries are the ones not currently in use.
- On the Systems page, select the system.
- Click Assign data source. The button is active only when more than one data source found the system.
- Select the data source to use and click OK.
Check a system's status
The Systems page shows each system's site, connectivity policy, data source, collector, and the results of its last verification and scan.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Not Verified | StorageGuard hasn't tried to connect yet. This is the starting status. |
| Connection Verified | StorageGuard connected, but hasn't scanned the system yet. |
| Connection Failed | StorageGuard couldn't connect. |
| Authentication Failed | StorageGuard connected, but sign-in failed, usually because of a wrong password. |
| Missing Credentials | No valid credential was provided. |
| Multiple Credentials | More than one credential was provided for the system. |
| Ping Succeeded / Ping Failed | The result of a ping to the system. |
| Data Collector Not Available | The collector that scans this system isn't available. |
| Scan Timed Out | The scan didn't finish in time. |
| Partially Scanned | The scan succeeded, but some information couldn't be retrieved. Contact Core6 Support. |
| Fully Scanned | The scan completed successfully. |
For scan errors in detail, see Fix scan errors.
Other actions on the Systems page
Right-click a system for these actions:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Scan | Runs a full scan of the system now. |
| Change Policy | Assigns a different connectivity policy. |
| Add Note | Adds or edits a note on the system, for example its owner or a maintenance window. |
| Delete | Removes the system from StorageGuard. |
| Scan custom Collection | Runs user-defined data collection expansion packages without a full scan. |
| Scan and Analyze risks | Runs expansion packages and then risk detection. |
| View custom Collection / View security Collection | Shows the data collected by expansion packages or by the built-in security collection packages. |
